The observable unit is the reference itself. A measurement can record the named entity, page URL, publishing domain, surrounding text, link status, publication date, and whether multiple pages trace back to one original source.

Machine Relations therefore measures mention distribution as a candidate explanatory variable and tests it against observed citation outcomes. Use a declared entity name set and observation window, then record each matching page and its root domain. Separate linked from unlinked mentions, owned from independent domains, and original publication from syndication or duplication.
Working model (not measured): pair the mention dataset with a fixed set of answer-engine queries. Record citations separately for each engine and date, then compare mention distribution with observed citation frequency. Share of citation is one possible output measure. The comparison can reveal an association in that sample; it does not by itself prove that mentions caused the citations.
Brand web mentions are not engagement metrics such as likes, shares, or comments. A measurement should also distinguish owned references from references published by an independent domain.
