Three independent findings published in early 2026 eliminated the ambiguity about whether AI search had reached meaningful scale.

Graphite.io's analysis of the five largest LLM products and six largest search engines found that AI platforms generate 45 billion monthly sessions globally, with ChatGPT representing 89% of that volume. When filtered to search-like prompts only, AI usage equals 28% of search worldwide and 17% in the United States. The scale is no longer the open question. The open question is measurement.

93% of sessions leave no trace

Semrush data from 2026 shows that 93% of Google AI Mode sessions end without an external click (Semrush, 2026). That figure is roughly double the zero-click rate of standard AI Overviews and more than triple the rate of traditional organic results.

Pew Research Center found that when an AI summary appears in search results, click rates drop from 15% to 8%, and only 1% of users click a link within an AI Overview. For marketers, these numbers describe a discovery channel where brand influence happens before any measurable interaction occurs. The buyer reads the AI answer, forms an impression, and either leaves satisfied or searches the brand directly. The original query, the AI's answer, and the brand's presence (or absence) in that answer are all invisible to standard analytics.

SparkToro's analysis of GA4 referral data found that 70.6% of AI-referred traffic is invisible in standard analytics configurations (SparkToro, 2025-2026). The traffic arrives, but it is miscategorized as direct, organic, or unattributed. Most GA4 implementations cannot distinguish a visitor who arrived because ChatGPT recommended them from one who typed the URL directly.

AI recommendations are structurally inconsistent

The measurement problem extends beyond zero-click behavior. The outputs themselves resist tracking.

SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 2,961 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI, with 600 volunteers entering identical prompts 60 to 100 times each. The findings: there is less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI will produce the same list of brand recommendations in any two responses to the same prompt. When factoring in order, the odds drop below 1 in 1,000 (SparkToro and Gumshoe, January 2026).

Only 30% of brands remain visible in back-to-back responses for the same query. Superlines tracked a 35.9% brand visibility decline over five weeks of monitoring identical prompts. AI citation sources change 40 to 60% monthly (Superlines, 2026).

This means any single snapshot of an AI's response to a query is statistically meaningless as a measurement of brand visibility. Rankings in AI answers do not exist in the way rankings exist in traditional search. What does exist is a probability distribution across hundreds of responses, and most brands are not running anywhere near enough prompts to calculate it.

SparkToro's conclusion was specific: "visibility percent across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric," but "any tool that gives a ranking position in AI is full of baloney" (SparkToro, January 2026).

The conversion signal points in the opposite direction

The measurement gap would be less urgent if AI-referred traffic were low-value. It is not.

Microsoft Clarity studied more than 1,200 publisher sites and found that AI-sourced visitors convert to sign-ups at 1.66%, compared to 0.15% from search, 0.13% from direct, and 0.46% from social. Copilot-referred traffic converts at 17 times the rate of direct traffic (Microsoft Clarity, November 2025).

Adobe's Holiday 2025 data showed AI referral traffic to retail sites surged 693% year over year. AI referrals converted 31% higher than other traffic sources. Revenue per visit from AI referrals increased 254% year over year (Adobe, January 2026).

Seer Interactive's 15-month study of 3,119 informational queries across 42 organizations found that organic CTR dropped 61% for queries where AI Overviews appeared, falling from 1.76% to 0.61%. But brands cited within AI Overviews achieved 35% higher organic CTR and 91% higher paid CTR compared to brands not cited (Seer Interactive, September 2025).

The traffic that does arrive from AI search is significantly more valuable per visit than traditional organic traffic. The problem is that most of it is invisible, and the visible portion cannot be attributed to the AI interaction that caused it.

Forrester named the gap

Forrester formalized the measurement problem in March 2026 by introducing the term "visibility vacuum." The core argument: as buyer research shifts into answer engines, marketers lose visibility into buyer questions, activity, and intent. The practical consequence is that most brands in 2026 have more influence from AI search than they can measure, and less control over that influence than they assume. The brands running a few manual ChatGPT queries per quarter and calling it "AI monitoring" are operating with a sample size that would be rejected in any other measurement discipline.
